Autumn update For the seventh year running, this October Cityscape Dubai opened its doors to more than 70,000 people from over 150 different countries worldwide. The exhibition provides an annual forum that celebrates the very best in real estate, architecture, urban planning and design from around the world.
One of the most talked about projects was announced by Nakheel just a day before the opening of Cityscape 2008 – Nakheel Harbour & Tower a £24 billion project comprising a tower more than a kilometre high and the world’s only inner city harbour.
Another equally momentous event that took place in Dubai last month was the opening of GITEX Shopper and Consumer Expo 2008.
After 18 years, GITEX is the largest and most popular retail platform for technology in the Middle East. It attracts global vendors from across the region exhibiting over 25,000 products.
This October also saw the official opening of Dubai International Airport’s (DIA) new Terminal 3. By 2011, it is estimated that 75 million people will pass through DIA, cementing Dubai’s position as both an economic gateway and premier leisure and retail destination.

Perceptions of Dubai revealed! What do you really think about Dubai? Is it vibrant, luxurious, a great family, conference or incentive destination ... or all of the above and more? Well, the DTCM in conjunction with C&IT Magazine have found out exactly how corporate and agency buyers view this multi-faceted emirate. Participants were asked about the decision-making process, selecting Dubai, group types, competition and – perhaps most interestingly – their future predictions.
And the results are particularly revealing.
When asked about initial perceptions of Dubai, participants selected words/phrases such as “development, sunshine/heat, wealth, five-star/quality hotels”.
And as for what destinations rival Dubai – 65 per cent said US cities of which 31 per cent said New York, other competitors also included destinations in Asia and the Far East.
When questioned on the decision making process, respondents indicated that budget was still a key driver and both agencies and corporates felt that “familiarisation trips were the best way of learning to sell a destination”.
The full perception study will be available to read in the November/December issue of C&IT Magazine.
