RailwayOn the right track

Railway projects across the region are set to radically change the way trade is done. Plans valued at £68b have been announced for new rail networks linking the GCC and beyond.

In the UAE £7b will be invested in a network over 1,500km long, scheduled to roll out over the next 7-8 years. Across the region, a GCC network will include one rail line of 1,970 km connecting all GCC countries and Qatar via a bridge. A second line of 1,984 km will stretch between Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Oman.

V.G. Ramakrishnan, Senior Director, Automotive and Transportation Practice, South Asia and Middle East at Frost & Sullivan said “60% of the goods that enter the UAE are re-exported. What I can see is that with a well established railway system, goods will be transported more efficiently reducing congestion in the airports” he also believes that the rail links will mean that transportation of people will become more efficient, accessible and cheaper.

Check in at the mall

A relaxation of the regulations governing luggage on the Metro has created the opportunity for Emirates to introduce self-service check in kiosks at key Dubai Metro stations.

Passengers can use the machines to access their boarding passes up to two hours before departure time and travel directly to Emirates Terminal 3 on the Metro.

Mohammed H Mattar, Emirates’ divisional senior vice president, Airport Services said: “Self-service check-in kiosks at some of Dubai’s metro stations are an innovation that will allow Emirates’ customers the convenience to access their boarding pass before they get to the airport.” The new machines are located at Mall of the Emirates, Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall and Financial Centre Metro stations on the Red line.
